Position Description

Summary of Job Duties:

The Center for the Study of Obesity within the Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health is seeking a post-doctoral fellow for a two-year fixed term with possibility of extension. The successful candidate will be integral to achieving the Center’s research mission by engaging in applied research related to obesity, nutrient/food consumption, and policy/program evaluation. The successful candidate will play a central role in supporting the Center’s efforts on a National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded evaluation of a green schoolyard initiative taking place in Little Rock. The successful candidate will support the Center’s research mission to address health equity and diversity as described below in key responsibilities. The Center is committed to professional development of postdoctoral fellows. The College of Public Health has a successful track record of placing postdoctoral fellows in tenure track positions and in helping junior scholars secure pathway to independence funding through NIH K-awards and similar mechanisms. Postdoctoral fellows are encouraged to develop and submit such applications during their time at UAMS.


Responsibilities:

  • Analyzes data and produce manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals.
  • Data collection through accelerometry, surveys, recess observations, and interviews. Because many of these data collection activities will take place at local schools, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a background check through the partnering school district.
  • Interacting with stakeholder groups including, but not restricted to, families of schoolchildren, school staff, government officials, non-profit entities, and community leaders.
  • Facilitation of research studies and general data acquisition.
  • Designing and implementing empirical strategies to address secondary and administrative datasets related to nutrition, health, and behavioral development.
  • Developing background on policies and programs that affect diet, exercise, nutritional security, and other pathways to improve weight outcomes or improve management of obesity and obesity-related conditions.
  • Supports grant writing efforts. The successful applicant is expected to pursue career development awards for his/her career advancement.
  • Other duties as assigned
Candidate’s Qualifications (who should apply)
  • Doctoral degree with experience in exercise science, human nutrition, child development, the behavioral sciences, and/or public health.

 

Special knowledge, abilities and skills:

  • Ability to work in community-engaged research.
  • Works well with the public and be respectful of diverse cultures.
  • Bilingual (Spanish) speaking is a plus.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One or more years of experience interacting with schools and community organizations (elementary and secondary school children is preferred).
