ISBNPA Webinar SIG e & mHealth, April 2019: Investigating Communication about Genomics and Health Behavior with Virtual Reality Simulations

Title: Investigating Communication about Genomics and Health Behavior with Virtual Reality Simulations

Speaker: Susan Persky, National Human Genome Research Institute, National Institutes of Health

Chair: Mavra Ahmed

Moderator 1: Amanda Staiano

Moderator 2: Petra Wark

Abstract:

This talk will cover a program of research exploring the function of emerging genomic knowledge relevant to common health conditions like obesity in interactions between health care providers and patients, as well as in behavior change and public health contexts. This work capitalizes on virtual reality-based simulations to investigate how genomic information influences outcomes such as healthcare communication, relationships between patients and providers, and parents’ food choices for their children.

Bio:

Susan Persky is an Associate Investigator, Head of the Communication Attitudes and Behavior Unit, and directs the Immersive Virtual Environment Testing Area (IVETA) within the Social and Behavioral Research Branch at the National Human Genome Research Institute, National Institutes of Health (NIH). Dr. Persky earned a Ph.D. in social psychology from the University of California, Santa Barbara where she studied at the Research Center for Virtual Environments and Behavior. She came to the NIH in 2005. Dr. Persky splits her effort between providing leadership for the IVETA and conducting her programmatic research. Her work investigates the function of new genomic knowledge about common conditions like obesity in interactions between health care providers and patients, and in public and online discourse. She draws upon virtual reality and other technologically-oriented tools to conduct her research. Dr. Persky has published extensively in the areas of health communication, genomics, and virtual reality methods, and has presented her work in venues such as the Smithsonian Institution and the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine. She is a member of the World Economic Forum Global Future Council on Virtual and Augmented Reality.
