Abstract:

Theoretical approaches are used in implementation science to describe and/or guide the process of translating research into practice, understand/explain influences on implementation, and evaluate implementation processes. There are currently more than 60 published theories, models and frameworks relevant to dissemination and implementation (D&I), however, the benefits of using these models is suboptimal if they are used haphazardly. In addition to D&I theories and models, there are research designs that may be more suited to studying D&I (e.g. pragmatic trials and hybrid implementation-effectiveness trials) than traditional clinical trials in the physical activity and nutrition field. Greater understanding and consensus on optimal research methods such as the appropriate use of implementation frameworks, models, and study designs within research may help advance the translation of physical activity and nutrition evidence into practice.
