Position Description

The faculty of the Kinesiology Department in the McQueary College of Health and Human Services are inviting applications for a colleague to join our team serving as department head of our diverse and collegial academic unit. Missouri State University (MSU) is classified as a Carnegie doctoral/professional university.

Kinesiology offers undergraduate programs in: Physical Education; Exercise and Movement Science; Recreation, Sport and Park Administration; Radiography; Respiratory Therapy; graduate programs in: Kinesiology; Professional Studies – Sports Management emphasis.

The Department Head is responsible for administering an academic department within a college which may include and is not limited to, faculty recruitment and development, faculty evaluation, program development, program review, curriculum development, student advisement, departmental budgeting and budget control, class schedule planning, and general supervision of the teaching, research, and service and related scholarly activities of the department.

Candidate’s Qualifications (who should apply)

The position requires an earned Doctorate in a field related to Kinesiology (PhD, EdD, etc.) with relevant academic experience; sustained record of scholarship including peer-reviewed publications; commitment to obtaining and managing grants and other external funding; record of teaching excellence; and service meriting the rank of associate or full professor with tenure.

Successful candidates must present: 
• Distinguished record of teaching, service, and scholarship meriting the rank of associate or full professor with tenure 
• Evidence of previous effective university administration or leadership roles 
• Involvement with academic strategic planning, curriculum planning, faculty recruitment, development and evaluation, student recruitment and retention, program assessment, budget and resource management, and fundraising 
• Experience gaining and maintaining accreditation for academic programs 
• Experience mentoring faculty and students 
• Outstanding interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills to lead a team toward goal achievement 
• Experience working with multiple constituencies and the experience or potential to build effective collaborations within the department, as well as with the University and community 
• Ability to lead through democratic team building and promote cohesiveness and a culture that values diverse views and perspectives 
• Demonstrated knowledge, understanding of, and commitment to multicultural and diversity issues.

How to Apply

The Department Head is the senior administrator of the academic unit and serves as the liaison for the Department with the Dean, Provost, and other University Departments. The Head is responsible for communicating faculty sentiment and championing departmental needs to internal and external constituents; overseeing departmental organization and administration including curricular and fiscal management, staffing and search processes; directing ongoing program development and program review; coordinating student recruitment and retention, admissions, advisement, and evaluation; providing faculty mentoring in research and teaching; supervising and evaluating faculty and staff; resolving informal complaints and formal grievances according to university policy; overseeing course scheduling and managing per-course faculty; participating in teaching, scholarship, and service; and participating in development and general outreach activities.

Salary and rank are commensurate with qualifications and experience. Benefits available include health, vision, life, and dental insurance, as well as selection of several defined contribution retirement programs.  The position is a twelve-month appointment.

Start date is July 1, 2022.
