Abstract:
Dr Loughney will provide a background to the cancer care curative pathway and what effects it has on patients. She will then introduce prehabilitation and discuss the current evidence base in this field. More specifically, she will provide an overview from her teams’ research on the beneficial effects of pre-operative exercise training in people with newly diagnosed cancer (United Kingdom and Ireland). Then, she will present findings from a recent Cochrane review on the effects of exercise training for people with cancer undergoing cancer treatment and surgery, and suggest the direction of future work.

Building on the emerging evidence and interest in ‘Exercise as Medicine,’ Dr. Bluethmann will discuss her work on using exercise to mitigate symptoms with older cancer survivors (those that are 65 years and older) that have completed cancer treatment. She will first describe common health conditions and challenges that older cancer survivors experience that may impact participation in physical activity using data from patients within the Penn State catchment area (28 counties in Central Pennsylvania). Then, she will present information about her upcoming exercise trial funded by the American Cancer Society. This clinical trial will focus on applying exercise-based strategies in cancer treatment.
