PhD Scholarship Opportunity – Physical Activity and Sleep

Adults spend two thirds of each day awake and one third asleep. When awake, the volume, pattern and intensity of physical activity that people engage in, and their engagement in other lifestyle behaviours such as diet, influences their risk of CVD and other chronic diseases. Healthy sleep is not just about duration, it is a duration, quality and timing of sleep that leave you feeling refreshed, and healthy sleep also reduces chronic disease risk. However, relatively little is known about the combined influence of physical activity and sleep on health and few interventions aim to improve both behaviours. The successful applicant will work with the supervisory team to develop a program of research that will enhance understanding of the combined influence of physical activity and sleep on health and wellbeing, and/or evaluating the efficacy of interventions that aim to improve these behaviours. One PhD scholarship is available under the supervision of Associate Professor Mitch Duncan and Dr Stina Oftedal. The PhD will focus on understanding the combined influence of physical activity and sleep on the health and wellbeing of adults. The program of research may include epidemiological studies and/or behavioural interventions.
