Position Description

DCU
Sport in conjunction with the School of Health and Human Performance are
combining to offer a unique teaching and research opportunity to a suitably
qualified candidate.  MedEx, a chronic
illness rehabilitation programme caters for individuals with established
cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, heart failure, peripheral vascular
disease and pulmonary disorders.  Over 25
structured exercise classes run per week, and our long term aim is to develop
research activity alongside each programme.
This process is well underway and a number of undergraduate and
postgraduate research projects are in train, studying questions on exercise adherence,
health promotion and physiological / clinical responses to different exercise
protocols.  The successful candidate will
become part of this dynamic teaching and multi-disciplinary research team.

If
you are the successful candidate you will, from a teaching perspective, spend 60%
of your time in DCU Sport.  In this role
you will be expected to immerse yourself in the MedEx team and contribute to
the design and delivery of structured exercise classes as required.  You will assist the MedEx team in caring for
the needs of class participants, and in identifying and supporting the growth
and development of these programmes.  As
part of the MedEx team, you would become one of a small, highly qualified group
of experts in the applied area of exercise and special populations.  You will report directly to the Chief
Executive Officer of DCU Sport.

From
a research perspective, 40% of your time will be spent on researching a topic
aligned to one of the MedEx programmes.
The exact nature of your research question will be driven by your
personal research interest combined with staff expertise from the School of
Health and Human Performance.  Areas
available for study include exercise psychology, clinical exercise physiology, health
promotion, programme efficacy etc.  The
expectation would be that you would complete a postgraduate research
qualification (either an M.Sc. or a Ph.D.) on a part-time basis and within an
acceptable timeframe.  You will become
part of the MedEx research cluster and will have the full support and access to
the School of Health and Human Performance resources and postgraduate
laboratories.

Both
DCU Sport and the School of Health and Human Performance are committed to the
all round academic and professional development of our research assistants.  Funding will be based on the Research
Assistant Scale (approximately €28,569-€30,309 per annum) commensurate with
experience at 60% pro-rate (for teaching element).  Research fees would also be covered by the
studentship.

Candidate’s Qualifications (who should apply)

Successful applicants will normally have
a postgraduate qualification or an upper second class honours degree in
physical education, sport science and health or a cognate area.  Additional professional qualifications, such
as an industry standard in health and fitness instruction (REPS or equivalent)
would be welcome.  Experience of teaching
group fitness instruction is essential, and evidence of project management and
report writing would be an advantage. You would need to be able to demonstrate
your ability to work independently with support of a teaching or research
supervisor and the enthusiasm to contribute to a stimulating teaching and
research environment. Informal enquiries (email only) and applications (full
curriculum vitae with referee details and personal statement) should be
directed in the first instance to:
