The Division of Public
Health Sciences (PHS) of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC)
invites applications from population science researchers with an interest in
obesity and cancer, with a particular focus on developing, testing and
implementing population-based interventions to reduce obesity rates and promote
energy balance in adults or children. One
position is available and open to researchers of any rank, although preference
will be given to established investigators (Associate or Full Member equivalent
to Associate or Full Professor, respectively at a University) with a track
record of leadership and independent funding.
An appointment in the Department of Health Services at the University of
Washington is also anticipated, depending on qualifications and interests. The
incumbent will be expected to conduct an active program of independent and
collaborative research pertinent to the mission of the FHCRC and the PHS
Division, to provide leadership to a multi-disciplinary group of investigators
at FHCRC and local sister institutions and to develop a vibrant research
collaboration aimed at having a local, national and international impact on
obesity and associated chronic diseases.
The FHCRC is
a world-renowned research institution with large and active efforts in basic
biological sciences, human biology, clinical research, epidemiology,
biostatistics, and cancer prevention research. Its mission is the elimination
of cancer as a cause of human suffering and death. The FHCRC conducts research
of the highest standards to improve prevention and treatment of cancer and
related diseases. The PHS Division has a
large, multidisciplinary faculty organized into five administrative
programs: Cancer Prevention,
Epidemiology, Biostatistics & Biomathematics, Computational Biology and
Translational Research. Investigators
have access to a state-of-the-art exercise facility, human nutrition
laboratory, and nutritional biomarkers laboratories as well as access to shared
resources for nutritional assessment, biostatistics, computational biology,
biomarker laboratories, specimen processing and genomics and proteomics
facilities. The FHCRC is an
NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center with active training programs for
graduate students and post-doctoral fellows and offers exceptional
opportunities for scientific interactions with other investigators in top level
research institutions in the Seattle area.
The Division of Public Health Sciences at FHCRC
maintains a close relationship to the School of Public Health (SPH) at the
University of Washington, one of the nation’s leading schools of public
health. Most faculty in the Division
maintain an appointment in the UW-SPH or one of the five other health science
schools at UW, which allows PHS faculty to participate in undergraduate and
graduate level teaching and mentoring.
The UW-SPH has five departments:
Biostatistics, Environmental & Occupational Health Sciences,
Epidemiology, Global Health, and Health Services. The UW School of Public Health is committed
to recruiting enterprising, dynamic faculty to join and strengthen research in
the area of obesity, food, physical activity, and health. UW faculty engage in teaching, research, and
