Abstract:

Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) is a research approach that is employed to achieve health equity. Most researchers do not reflect the populations that we study and intervene with to improve health and well-being. Therefore, actively engaging community representatives as co-researchers throughout the research process ensures the research is innovative, culturally appropriate, and more effective than traditional research. Further, the application of Empowerment Theories may facilitate this process. CBPR can be mutually beneficial to the researcher and the participant. At the same time researchers experience challenges within academe that may hinder their application of this approach. This presentation will discuss the application of Empowerment Theories to guide CBPR as well as the benefits and challenges to help researchers navigate this research approach.
