The MS Nanney award is a prize for a specific research project that exemplifies ISBNPA values of behavioural nutrition and/or physical activity to better human health that has an impact beyond scientific study (e.g. dissemination, public engagement).

The process

The ISBNPA community is asked to nominate potential awardees.

The Awards Committee evaluates the proposals and makes a recommendation for the Executive Committee.

A decision is made under consensus of both committees.

The winner

The Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program (GusNIP) is a USDA-funded initiative that supports projects aimed at improving access to fruits and vegetables for low-income individuals and families. GusNIP was established in 2018 through the US Farm Bill. Administered by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), GusNIP provides grants to support nutrition incentive (NI) and produce prescription (PPR) projects nationwide. NI initiatives help Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participants stretch their food dollars by offering matching incentives when purchasing fresh fruits and vegetables at farmers markets, grocery stores, and other retail outlets. PPR initiatives allow healthcare providers to “prescribe” fruits and vegetables to patients as part of a broader effort to manage or prevent diet-related chronic diseases. GusNIP not only supports healthier food choices and improved food and nutrition security, but also strengthens local food systems by connecting communities with farmers and food retailers. The program is named in honor of Gus Schumacher, a champion of food access. Crucially, the GusNIP National Training, Technical Assistance, Evaluation, and Information Center (NTAE), led by the Center for Nutrition & Health Impact, has established a shared evaluation framework for this national food policy initiative.

Led by the Center for Nutrition & Health Impact in partnership with Fair Food Network, University of California San Francisco and a coalition of partners including the National Grocers Association Foundation, Michigan Farmers Market Association and Food Trust, the Nutrition Incentive Hub has expertise in a multitude of areas, with presence across the nation. These partners are developing systems, infrastructure, and collaborative networks and relationships to support GusNIP grantees, while building capacity and sustainability. These efforts will help maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of nutrition incentive and produce prescription projects in meeting priorities by: increasing fruit and vegetable purchase and consumption among program participants, reducing individual and household food insecurity, improving the nutrition and health status of participating households, reducing health care use and associated costs.

We’re fortunate to have an outstanding and large team of CNHI staff and collaborating partners! Among ISBNPA members, Amy Yaroch serves as the Project Director, Carmen Byker Shanks is the Co-Project Director, and Bailey Houghtaling contributes as a Research Scientist.

Since its launch, GusNIP has played a pivotal role in advancing nutrition security and access to healthy foods across the United States. By supporting NI and PPR initiatives, the program has enabled thousands of SNAP and low-income participants to increase their consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables. Participating households report healthier food choices, improved health outcomes, and stronger connections to local food systems. GusNIP has also delivered meaningful economic benefits, increasing revenue for local farmers and food retailers. By fostering collaboration among community organizations, healthcare providers, and food system stakeholders, the NTAE has helped amplify GusNIP’s impact and laid the foundation for evidence-based policy and practice aimed at improving public health and advancing food access.

The award was given at ISBNPA2025, Amy Yaroch (second from the left) received the award on behalf of the GusNIP team.

We now welcome all bids to organise the #ISBNPA2023 meeting

We now welcome all bids to organize the ISBNPA2027 meeting.
The proposal should take into consideration the aim of reducing Greenhouse Gas emissions, considering the venue, catering, travel, accommodation, and all other logistics related to the conference. This will be the main point in the evaluation of the proposals.

At this stage, we invite research groups within the field of behavioral nutrition and/or physical activity, who are interested in organizing the meeting in their city/country. ISBNPA will provide access to a private conference organizer, in close collaboration with the organizing team.

In 2025, the conference will be held in Auckland, New Zealand, and in 2026, in Cádiz, Spain.

As the annual meeting rotates between continents and considering a study ISBNPA conducted about the less GreenHouse Gas emissions locations given our membership, bids from Northeastern America are preferable for the 2027 meeting, but we will consider any proposed location.

The bids should be prepared until April 30, 2025. The decision will be made during the until the end of June 2025. ISBNPA is prepared to support you in the preparation of the bid (see text below for more information).

The local organizers are expected to:

a) be able to attract a local delegation to the meeting of at least 50 participants, preferably more

b) communicate how many participants are needed at the meeting to reach the budgetary break-even point

c) attract sponsors for the meeting, taking into account that ISBNPA will review every potential sponsor for consistency with its sponsorship policy.

2. Dates of the meeting should take other meetings into account, thinking about overlap, a possible combination of meetings, and other relevant factors. Dates should also take vacation periods into account in different parts of the world. Late May or early June are generally the most appropriate schedule for ISBNPA annual meetings.

3. ISBNPA will provide support through a PCO in the preparation of the budget and other components of the bids. Please contact us in advance to schedule preparatory meetings.

VENUE CONSIDERATIONS

1. The venue must reach net zero by the time of the conference.

The venue needs to be able to accommodate at least 800 participants in one room for the keynotes and the plenary sessions, and needs at least 8 parallel rooms (besides of the plenary room) for the parallel sessions of the symposia and orals.

The venue needs to have a place available for the posters (Which is large enough to put up 250 posters per day. Poster standard size is 90cm wide x 150cm high portrait style.) The poster room should have enough space to allow for poster session and can be potentially used as meeting place for people during breaks and lunch.

The venue needs at least one room for additional meetings of the EC, IJBNPA editorial board, etc. As previous meetings attracted more participants (up to 1,200) the possibility to accommodate a larger crowd is preferable. As in previous meetings, the use of two venues located within walking distance can also be considered.

The venue needs appropriate rooms and facilities not only for presentations and posters but also for workshops, EC annual meeting, Annual business/membership meeting, mentoring meetings, committee meetings/journal editorial meetings, etc.

We have found that as a medium size meeting we may be too small for large convention centres and as such innovative conference venues that make use of University / Hotel / large halls within the city or a combination of such settings may be interesting options that provide a stimulating, interactive meeting for between 600 and 900 people. When considering venues examine not just the cost of venue hire but also AV and food costs as often these last two costs can be very large and are an area that is open to negotiation.

A variety of budget options should be available for accommodation, covering a wide range of prices, especially considering the large number of students and early career researchers that typically attend ISBNPA meeting.

The annual meeting normally runs from Wednesday evening with a first keynote and an opening reception, to Saturday afternoon, with a closing ceremony. The day before the actual meeting (i.e. the Wednesday) a full day EC meeting and preconference workshops take place. On the evening of this day the first keynote and the opening reception are held. Further, the meeting continues for 3 complete days with presentations.

BUDGET CONSIDERATIONS

ISBNPA is very dependent on the income derived from every annual meeting. A minimum profit of 35,000 USD is suggested.

ISBNPA takes financial responsibility for the meeting, this means that all profit from the meeting (including sponsorship) goes back to ISBNPA. If a deficit occurs, it would be covered by ISBNPA.

A contract will be signed in advance by the chair of the local organizing committee with the venue and with the local facilitator. Finances needed at this point are made available by ISBNPA through its treasurer.

Sponsorship is an essential source of revenue to the society. However, all sponsors must be approved by the EC and be consistent with our sponsorship policy. Inevitably, this reduces the amount of income that can be derived from sponsorship and we, therefore, think it is crucial that all potential host teams set realistic sponsorship targets when setting the bid. I Sponsors have included local non-profit organisations, government agencies, physical activity monitoring companies, software companies and publishers.

In setting the registration fees we want to make sure that affordable fees for students (but they should cover at least 80% of the cost of F&B) are available and that the fee for members are at least $250 less than the non-member fee. (This is to encourage attendees to become members of the society which currently costs $250). We have included at the end of this document the fees for each category for the meetings in last 5 years.

DOCUMENTATION TO SUBMIT THE BID

Bids need to be sent to António Palmeira, ISBNPA Executive Director (executivedirector@isbnpa.org) by April 30 2025. They will be discussed in the EC and decision is expected to be reached during until the end of June 2025. It is likely that the EC will seek additional information from the best-placed bids before making a final decision.

Bids need to include the following information:

Description of the local research group and links with ISBNPA

How the proposal aims to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions.

Location of the conference

Accommodation costs (high, mid-range and budget options)

Additional activities in the area

Possible sponsors and estimated amount of financial support

Number of locals (i.e. from the state or country) expected to attend the conference

The break-even number of paying delegates needed to cover the costs

Closest airport and distance/accessibility to conference venue including International accessibility by air

On November 28, 2024, a pivotal meeting was held between the ISBNPA Executive Committee and ORO Consulting Group to evaluate the current strategic plan (2022-2025) and lay the groundwork for the forthcoming ISBNPA Strategic Plan (2025-2030). This collaborative session marked a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to advancing research and promoting global health through behavioral nutrition and physical activity.

The outcomes of this critical meeting will be unveiled at the ISBNPA2025 Annual Meeting in June, hosted in Auckland. Attendees can anticipate a comprehensive presentation detailing our strategic objectives designed to foster innovation, enhance member engagement, and expand global impact over the next five years.
